Teaching Writing By Using Please (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate,Supply,End) Strategy a Teight Grader Of MTSN 3 Lima Puluh Kota In 2017/2018 Academic Year
Abstract
Writing is one of the important skills in learning English. Writing means a person's skill or ability in expressing ideas, thoughts and opinions into paper media in the form of writing. However, some students still have difficulty in writing. So to solve the problem, the researcher used the PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy in teaching writing. The purpose of this research is to find out whether learning to write using the PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) strategy is effective for students or not. This research was conducted using the type of Experimental Research. The population in this study was grade VIII students of MTsN 3 Fifty Cities which consisted of eight classes. Samples were selected using the Clusters sampling technique. The experimental class is taught using the PLEASE strategy (pick, list, evaluate, activate, supply, end) and the control class uses ordinary teaching. The instrument of this research is the Writing test. The instrument is valid because the material is valid based on the curriculum and syllabus. Furthermore, the instrument can be trusted because it uses inter-rater reliability. The t-test formula suggested by Gay et.al (2012:351) was used to analyze the post-test scores of the two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. The data were analyzed by giving a post-test in the form of a writing test. After the researcher got the data, the t-count results were 2,478 and the t-table was 2,000. From these results, the t-count is higher than the t-table. This means that H₁ is accepted and H is rejected. Thus, there is a significant effect of using the PLEASE strategy in teaching writing in class VIII of MTsN 3 Lima Puluh Kota in the 2017/2018 school year. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to apply this strategy, especially in teaching writing.
