STUDENT’S SPEAKING LEARNING STRATEGIES AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF STKIP YAYASAN ABDI PENDIDIKAN PAYAKUMBUH
Abstract
One language skill that students should be competent in is speaking. Meanwhile, STKIP Yayasan Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh students in the English department are still having trouble speaking. Among the issues include, for instance, a lack of vocabulary, a fear of making mistakes, unwillingness to talk in English, a lack of strategies, and others. This qualitative descriptive study aims to learn about the strategies implemented by students at STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh to overcome speaking difficulties during the academic year 2022–2023. The research participants utilized purposive sampling. The participants are STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh third- and fourth-year English Department students. The data source of this research was a questionnaire. The steps suggested by Gay and Airasian are used to analyze the data. Managing data, reading/memorization, classification, interpretation, and report writing belong to them. The results of this research show that STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh third- and fourth-year English department students used the Direct strategy (51) and the Indirect strategy (49) as strategies for speaking when learning a foreign language. This indicates that students prefer to employ direct speaking strategies while speaking.
